An artisan’s lien allows someone who repairs or improves personal property—such as a mechanic repairing a vehicle—to retain possession of it until paid.
Artisan’s lien must not be confused with mechanic’s lien. Artisan’s lien is put on personal (movable) property while a mechanic’s lien—on real estate.
Artisan’s lien is a legal encumberment typically filed by service providers who have not been paid for the labor to improve or repair personal property.
